Commentary on Ezekiel.

By Dr Peter Pett BA BD (Hons-London) DD

This commentary on Ezekiel looks at the prophecy of Ezekiel written to the Jews in exile prior to and following the destruction of Jerusalem in 587 BC. Ezekiel was a priest who was deeply concerned about the holiness of God, and Ezekiel wanted the people to reognise how they had failed Him. Ezekiel had a number of strange visions and experiences which are outlined in the Book of Ezekiel. The first vision of Ezekiel was one of the glory of God. In that vision Ezekiel was clearly shown that God's mercy and judgments were not limited to Jerusalem. Ezekiel learned that God was with them in Babylon. Ezekiel also learned of the glorious future that God had in mind for His people if only they would believe in Him and obey Him. For details of the commentary on the Book of Ezekiel see below.

Ezekiel was a visionary prophet given special revelation in amazing visions, and was raised up by God in the final days of Jerusalem to warn those who had been exiled to Babylonia of what was to come, and why. He warned them that they too would be open to similar judgment if they did not turn from their sin and rebellion against God. But in contrast he also declared a future of hope once Jerusalem was finally fallen. Foreign nations who had treated Israel badly would also come under God’s judgment. But finally God would raise up a Davidic king and establish him and His people in an everlasting kingdom, although prior to that will be a time of tribulation for the people of God. Later he declares that God has established His everlasting heavenly temple on a mountain in Israel so that His people may safely return knowing that God is there. And his will finally result in great blessing for His people.
