The Book of Psalms, or as we might more correctly call it, the five books of Psalms, reflects the worship of ancient Israel. They were written over a period of a thousand years and reveal both the experiences of individuals and of the nation. But they have been adapted for public worship.
Whatever our spiritual state, and however great our problems, we will always be able to find a Psalm to suit our case.
While this commentary has in mind the ideas that are constantly being put forward about the Psalms its main aim is to help the ordinary reader to understand and appreciate them, and to that end critical examination of them has been kept to a minimum. What the writer has been concerned to do is to seek to get to the heart of the meaning of the Psalms, with the hope that they will prove a blessing to the reader.
