London Welsh band SkinTrade play the Dublin Castle, Camden Town, on 19th August.

Diffiniad are calling it a day after ten years of getting people to strut their funky stuff. They play their last ever gig on 10 August 2001 at Maes B, supported by Pep Le Pew. Diffiniad will release a greatest hits album containing all their most popular tunes and five brand new tracks at the end of this year.

Tommy and the Chauffeur will play this year's big weekend festival in Cardiff city centre on Friday 3rd August. It is, of course, free and held in front of the museum. Also appearing on the night are Tetra Splendour, Lost Prophets and Gorkys Zygotic Mynci. Tommy and the Chauffeur will be on stage at 7.30pm.

On the third Monday of September, Tommy and the Chauffeur will be releasing a new EP. The lead track will be the sprawling and anthemic 'Kids' Chorus' and it will be backed by three other tracks which have yet to be decided on but will almost certainly include the songs 'London' and 'You're Surrounded. It will be released on Boobytrap Records (not the singles club) and will not be a subscriber single, it will simply be available in the shops.

The cancelled Catatonia gig at Cambridge Corn Exchange, due to take place on 30 July, has now been re-scheduled to Friday 28 September. Thanks to Robert Davies for this info.

Newsletter from Stiff Kittens:

"Stiff Kittens the up and coming Welsh Rock Act and the last band ever to play Wembley Stadium last, first, were recently confirmed to support FEEDER the up and coming Welsh Rock Act (who have recently scored several top ten singles and a top five album) at the Ross-on-Wye International Music Festival*.

In true Rock n Roll fashion though plan A went south and there’s now insufficient time to soundcheck both bands following a performance by the Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, no less. All is not lost though as, after much brow beating and gnashing of teeth, a cunning plan has been hatched:

The band have been rescheduled to play at a local venue, prior to the Feeder show on the main festival site, and not content with that they will play another highly charged set after Feeder with sound and booze flowing until 1am. The boyz from Feeder will be duly invited and who knows what may occur

Thursday 23rd August 2001

8pm Stiff Kittens will perform a Free 1hr set at the Prince of Wales, Ross
10pm FEEDER perform as scheduled at in the Main Tent @ Ross Festival
11.30 pm Stiff Kittens perform a second, different set at the Prince of Wales

Doors 7pm, limited to 180 capacity, arrive early. Bar open until 1am, entry charge £2 after 10pm

Feeder tickets available in advance from the festival office on 01989 563 330

For information on Stiff Kittens call Absolute Marketing on 01989 767 868 or e-mail info@tourdates.co.uk

*Also on the bill this year are Van Morrison, Joan Armatrading, Atomic Kitten (no relation), The Honeyz, Lulu, Hot House Flowers, The Bluetones, Midge Ure, Eddi Reader, Billie Jo Spears, and Vanessa Mae. For further info go to: www.festival.org.uk or call 01989 563 330."

Super Furry Animals have received their first Technics Mercury Prize Shortlist for their latest album Rings Around The World.

Rings Around The World, which is released this week on Epic Records, joins a shortlist that includes Radiohead, Elbow, Basement Jaxx, Gorillaz and PJ Harvey. The shortlist was chosen from an entry of over 180 albums by British and Irish artists. Last year’s prize was won by Badly Drawn Boy’s ‘The Hour Of The Bewilderbeast’.

The winner of the 2001 Technics Mercury Music Prize will be announced at the Mercury Prize Show on Tuesday, 11th September. For the first time this year the event will be broadcast by Channel 4 with a special 90-minute programme to be screened on Wednesday, 12th September. As in previous years the Mercury Prize show will also be broadcast on Radio 1.

Rings Around The World becomes the first studio album to be released simultaneously on DVD. The format features 18 exclusive films commissioned for the project, as well as sixteen remixes of the album’s tracks, a photo gallery and web links. Super Furry Animals tour the UK in September and October.

A recent Anweledig football match, the semi-final of the Inter Quarries Championship, ended in a shock defeat for the outside favourites Anweledig F.C. (also known as Camelod Fflat).

Final score:

Anweledig F.C. 4 -v- 9 Blaenau Rugby Club

Singer Ceri and guitarist Gai picked up the goals for Anweledig. Percussionist Sunshine Dan would have added to the team, but unfortunately he was on the sidelines nursing an injury he'd picked up mid-season - though he was raising the Anweledig spirits slapping that bongo harder than ever before! There was a dug-out full of bongos and strange percussion instruments, which the people of Blaenau all bashed away at. Not your normal football match!

Although the band were knocked out at this late stage, they will be appearing at the Final to perform a live percussion set from the sidelines.

The Inter Quarries Final lineup is Blaenau Rugby Club -v- Porthmadog.

Thanks to the
anweledig.com webmaster, Marc Colclough, for this information.

Juventus stars invited to sample Welsh culture

Cymdeithas yr Iaith have offered to play host to the young international stars of Juventus Football Club at the National Eisteddfod Field, and have invited them to call in at a Welsh-language rock concert after the match in Rhyl on Thursday, August 9th.

Juventus will be participating in an international Under-21 Football Tournament at Rhyl F.C. Football Ground during the Eisteddfod week, and will be playing Aston Villa at Belle Vue on the Thursday evening.

During the same week,Cymdeithas yr Iaith will be holding nightly Welsh-language rock and folk concerts at the Celebrities Club at Hotel Marina Rhyl. The veteran Welsh rock star, Meic Stevens, will be heading the line-up on that evening.

One of the Cymdeithas organisers, Toni Schiavone - who himself has family links with Italy - said, "We shall well understand if a late night of chips and beer in Rhyl does not quite fit in with the Juventus dietary regime! You never know - they might be able to call in briefly and everyone at the concert would give them a great reception.

"We are more hopeful that they will be able to stopover at the National Eisteddfod Field at Denbigh en route from their hotel near Chester to Rhyl Football Ground. We have offered to Rhyl F.C. that our young members could meet them and show them around the Eisteddfod so as to sample living Welsh culture.

"We shall also be offering special £10 tickets for Eisteddfodwyr on Thursday August 9th which will include return coach travel to Rhyl, admission to the Juventus/Aston Villa game at 7.15pm at Belle Vue and admission to the Meic Stevens gig at Celebrities afterwards. Many Welsh people support JUVE through the S4C programme 'Sgorio' and the combination of Juventus and Meic Stevens will prove to be a great attraction."

ANWELEDIG NEWS

Anweledig, as usual, are keeping themselves extremely busy over the summer.

Forthcoming Radio Cymru broadcasts of the band include one on 3 July from their performance at Castell Emlyn, and another on 7 July being broadcast from Porthmadog.

The band release a new EP on 4th August on their own label, which is as yet unnamed. The EP contains the tracks Ehangu, Lowe Alpine and Sefyllfa Heb Ateb. The EP was recorded in May 2001 at Sylem Studios, Betws-y-Coed, famously owned by Welsh popsters Melys. An MP3 sample of the track(s) will be placed on anweledig.com shortly.

Forthcoming live dates from Anweledig include:

  • Two gigs on 18th August - one during the afternoon in Newtown in Mid Wales with Melys in an as-yet unknown venue, and then later that evening at the Miri Madog festival in Porthmadog, North Wales, which will also feature Terris and presumably Big Leaves.
  • The Cae Yn Nefyn festival on 28 July, which is now happily back on after having been cancelled earlier in the year due to the foot and mouth crisis.
  • A small tour of England is also being arranged with guests Llwybr Llaethog, Estella and Pep Le Pew. The only confirmed date at the time of writing is the one we previously reported - 18 July at the Bull & Gate, Kentish Town, North London.

For more specific details visit
anweledig.com which is updated regularly.

FEEDER NEWS (and lots of it!)

  • Gran Turismo 3 is now set for release in June, while Sony make the final tweaks to make sure it’s in a class of its own. The music selected for Gran Turismo 3 is “from the third album and “b” sides from the singles.” In fact, one of the B-sides for 7 Days In The Sun is GT3’s title track, Just A Day. Feeder also did some tracks for the fisrt Gran Turismo which included sweet 16 shade tangerine and chicken on a bone.
  • Grant's much-talked about remix of the new Mark B & Blade single was released last Monday. The remix is the A-side of the single by the British hip hop veterans and has been recieving heavy radio play. Not only has Grant remixed the track, but he has added the trademark Feeder guitar sound to the mix too, along with Jon's drumming. Needless to say it rocks!
  • Tour dates:
16 Jun 2001 Imola Festival Italy
22 Jun 2001 Sound Arena Rock Switzerland
29 Jun 2001 Werchter Festival Belgium
30 Jun 2001 MTV Monster Mastership Skateboard Dortmund
1 Jul 2001 Roskilde Festival Denmark
8 Jul 2001 T in the Park Scotland
27 Jul 2001 Fuji Festival Japan
5 Aug 2001 Witnness Festival Dublin
17 Aug 2001 Bizzarre Festival Germany
18 Aug 2001 Gampel Festival Switzerland
    25 Aug 2001 Festival Reading
    26 Aug 2001 Festival Leeds
  • The new single will be Turn - no release date as yet, but it's already been c-listed on the radio 1 playlist.

TrAnSpOsEr's guitarist has gone to san francisco for 3 months so they will be live from late september. Also S4C have used their song "Inner.state" on a new drama Y Ty which being aired very soon. Proud Mary have been added to the support bill at Stereophonics' Cardiff Millennium Stadium gig on 21 July.

It is reported that the stadium is also under consideration for staging September's Farm Aid gig, which aims to raise money for farmers affected by recent foot and mouth disease outbreaks.

This from a recent Tommy And The Chauffeur newsletter:

"Tommy and the Chauffeur
Patrick Jones
Teflon Monkey
Rachel Treseize

At the Hay On Wye festival. Saturday 2nd June. Starts at 8pm. The Globe Gallery. Newport Street. Tommy and the Chauffeur will perform an acoustic set. Huw Stephens will compere. Probably.

NEW TOMMY AND THE CHAUFFEUR EP

The very first Monday of September Tommy and the Chauffeur will be releasing a new EP. The lead track will be the sprawling and anthemic 'Kids' Chorus' and it will be backed by three other tracks which have yet to be decided on. It will be released on Boobytrap Records (not the singles club) and will not be a subscriber single, it will simply be available in the shops. That's right. Effort. We are sorry.

If any of the above is untrue then we cannot be held responsible and there is a rumour circulating that TATC will be supporting The Soft Parade in the Barfly at the end of June."

Anweledig are to be on Radio Cymru on 3 July. The band are adding gigs to their schedule at a rate of knots so if you want to know when they'll be playing near you, check their extremely groovy and just-updated website,
anweledig.com (if this link appears not to work, just keep trying - they've been having server problems at anweledig.com recently).

Stiff Kittens play Pontypridd Park on Sunday 10 June.

A duet by Catatonia's diva vocalist Cerys Matthews and Larry Adler is being shown on "This Way Up" next Tuesday (5th June) on HTV. Thanks to Margot Saint for this news.

Pep Le Pew: WBW's tip for the top
Anweledig are playing the Bull and Gate in Kentish Town, North London, on 18th July.

Support comes from the amazing Pep Le Pew and equally wonderful Estella. Llwybr Llaethog may be on the bill as well, however they are still unconfirmed. Keep checking Anweledig's website for details.

Debs and Lewis would like to thank Pep Le Pew and Anweledig for a fun-filled few days involving watching two North Wales sunrises, talking plenty of bollocks and repeated beautiful enunciation of the words Llanrwst, drws, guarantee, runway, hideous and Trawsfynydd. If you ever want an instant orgasm without having to touch your messy bits, just have a quick chat with either Ceri Cunnington or Aron Jones and you'll be well away! Prrrrrrrr...

As previously reported on this site, a new biography of Catatonia is due for publication in just a few weeks' time.

To Hell And Back With Catatonia by long-time WBW supporter Brian Wright, published by Firefly, will reach bookshops no later than 1st June 2001 and will cost £12.99. WBW is also hoping to sell copies by mail order - check here after 1st June for further details.

Welsh Bands Weekly readers may remember Brian's story in issue 7 where he told how, having lost two close family members to cancer, he reached the depths of despair and tried to drink himself to death. One night in Cardiff his mission was interrupted by the appearance onstage of a then un-famous band fronted by a sexy, ballsy young woman whom Brian refers to as The Lady...

To Hell And Back... is more than a biography of a band. It's a story of triumph over depression, a story of the effect Catatonia have had on one man's life, an indication that there is hope and that severe depression can be overcome.

A quote from Welsh Bands Weekly appears on the front cover of the book. The quote used is: "Brian Wright is possibly the most qualified person to write a Catatonia biography, not counting the band members themselves!"

Although not an "official" biography of Catatonia, members of the band have provided Brian with many facts and stories that have not appeared in any other publication [NME writers take note: this is what "exclusive" means].

An interview with Brian will appear in issue 10 of Welsh Bands Weekly, which is due to go on sale at the end of June.

This news (although not strictly a story about a Welsh band) was added on 11 May 2001 at 2.20pm

NME invent new definition of the word "exclusive"

The UK's only remaining weekly music paper (and don't we fucking know it - for god's sake somebody get out there and challenge them), appears to have invented its own definition of the word "exclusive".

The newspaper's website, NME.com, has taken recently to running "exclusive" stories about Welsh bands which turn out to only be exclusive if "exclusive" means "also available on every other music site on the internet". Examples that specifically spring to mind are the two SFA stories we ran recently, about the new album and the Furrymania festivals; we uploaded the album story a good three hours before nme.com did, yet their news of the album's release details was still listed on nme.com as "exclusive".

The latest "exclusive" story the site is running is that Catatonia have changed the name of their album to "Paper, Scissors, Stone" - a story that we ran on this very site on 3 May. If you scroll down a bit you'll see that our story, which we don't pretend is "exclusive", came from the 27 April edition of the South Wales Echo!

A word of advice on etiquette to NME.com writers: it is considered polite to quote your sources. When Welsh Bands Weekly borrows stories from NME.com, we credit you for it. Please afford us - and dotmusic.com and rockfeedback.com and superfurryanimals@yahoogroups.com and all the other sites you 'borrow' stories from - the same courtesy. Manners cost nothing.

Gruff receiving 'Best Composer' award at Radio Cymru's Roc A Phop Awards

This report on Super Furry Animals from the SFANews Yahoogroup: NMEINDIE.COM was privileged to be present at a playback of the new Super Furries record this week. 'Rings Around The World' is the band's first LP for Sony, but any worries that signing to a major would dilute their sound can stop worrying. It's AMAZING. Look out for a more extensive look at the record we're already calling a 'Pet Sounds' for the 21st century. Seriously. You won't believe your ears.

A recent announcement about Super Furry Animals' next album has turned out to be a hoax.

Someone claiming to be Gruff Rhys posted a message on an internet guest book which said that the next album, TextMessaging Is Killing The Pub Quiz As We Know It, is being released on 24th August 2001. The message went on to give a track listing for the album.

However, after making a quick check with the Furries' press officer, Welsh Bands Weekly can confirm that the message is "not genuine at all".

Catatonia singer Cerys Matthews has told a fan the release date for the band's fourth album, and has said that the band will be on tour in the autumn.

Cerys told the fan, catatoniawales@aol.com, that the new album is due for release on 4th June and that the band will do a UK tour in August or September. Welsh Bands Weekly is attempting to get the story verified by the band's official spokesperson and we will report back when we have more details.

Anweledig's recent gig in Cardiff was met by double disaster.

According to a message from the band posted in the guest book at their website, not only did they have their laptop stolen while in Cardiff, but their tour bus was also vandalised, with a 'nameless person from Big Leaves' defacating on Dan Dan The Bongo Man's coat and pissing on singer Ceri Cunnington's clothes. To read the band's original message (in Welsh) click here

In the meantime, Anweledig have several gigs lined up over the next couple of months - check the band's website for further details.
