Bologna Motorshow F3000 Sprint, December 4th-8th 1999

(for International F3000 & F3000 Italia teams)

The short, indoor 586 metre track played host to both International F3000 and F3000 Italia teams and drivers in 1999. For each series a number of short races were held culminating in two finals, to decide the top four positions. All cars were required to compete using wet tyres; the emphasis was on spectacle rather than outright competition!

Apicella won the International F3000 sprint

Marco Apicella (above) won the International F3000 sprint in the Monaco Motorsport Lola B99/50, defeating Coloni's Fabrizio Gollin in the all-Italian final. Soheil Ayari was classified third overall, returning to Durango with whom he won an International F3000 round in 1998. Also joining Durango was Andrej Pavicevic after his season with Fortec. The others to race were Italian F3 front-runner Enrico Toccacelo with Coloni and Cyrille Sauvage with GP Racing.

Thomas Biagi won the F3000 Italia sprint in his GP Racing Lola T96/50, defeating Apicella in the final. The full results of this event are still wanted for the site...

Australia's Andrej Pavicevic finished in fifth place in the International F3000 sprint for the Italian team Durango. He told the Hot Open Wheelers site: "There were about 30,000 spectators present watching the F3000 race. It was an amazing experience racing at the show. I can say that I've never been busier in my life than for those intense 4 lap races. Accelerating to over 170km/h on the 2 soccer pitch length straights was a blast. The weather was cloudy, dry but very cold - 3 degrees Celsius. The track was very bumpy and I came to terms with it quite quickly."

"As the lights went to green, on wet weather tyres [wets mandatory] the car just spun the rear wheels - wheel spin from 1st to 5th - (you) should have seen the smile on my face! The rest was just a blur of wheel spin, controlling the wheel spin, oversteer, more oversteer, over steering and avoiding a bridge, braking and the constant changing of gears. In one 22 second lap we make 19 gear changes. By my calculations, over a 4 lap race that's 76 gear changes. See what I mean by blur! The crowd absolutely loved it when I had the rear hanging out. I suppose that's what I was there for, to make the crowd happy and of course to advertise the Zepter name throughout Italy and Europe where it was shown live on TV to many millions. I finished in 5th position with a trophy for most spectacular driver. I look forward to going back in 2000 to race at the show and learn from 1999, which was jump the start, but only if you speak Italian."
