Amaduzzi testing for PSM - (c) nuvolari3000.com

A new Formula 2 series was to be set up in Italy for 2002, using the Lola T96/50 chassis that was superceded [by the B99/50] in Euro 3000. The car was not going to use the Zytek engine, which powered it in International F3000 [1996-'98], Italian F3000 ['99-'00] and Euro 3000 ['01], but would instead be fitted with a 3000cc Cosworth V8 built by Swiss tuners Mader. The factory sealed engine was guaranteed to last 3500km and developed approx 460bhp. The winner of the new series was promised a test with European Minardi F1. Formula 2 was to be run by SPPM Organizzazione.

However, as of July 2002, it had been confirmed that the series has been cancelled, although there remained a possibility that a mini-series of 1 or 2 races could take place in winter. It was reported that there were problems with the Cosworth-Mader engine and with electrics, meaning organisers were due to use a more conventional Zytek-Judd F3000 engine instead. Lorenzo del Gallo (PSM) had tested a Lola-Cosworth at Magione at the end of August, completing 60 laps. Then the same team demonstrated two cars at Vallelunga before the 6 Hours sports/GT race in November, also testing Davide Amaduzzi at Magione in December (pictured). Meanwhile Andres Rios has signed a deal with Carlo Canali's Symbol team, all events which suggested the series was on track for a 2003 debut. However, with FIA F3000, Euro 3000, the Nissan World Series and Formula Renault V6, it seemed there was no market for another series at this level.
