Mr Smith like many of those who risked their lives during World War II to protect the free world from the evils of Nazism, will always be regarded with honour.
During the 2nd World War Mr Ian Douglas Smith served with the British RAF 237 Squadron, initially flying missions in support of the North Africa Campaign. Following a plane crash he suffered damage to one eye and surrounding facial area as well as a broken jaw, broken shoulder, broken leg and back injuries . After recovering in a Cairo hospital, he rejoined his squadron to fly further World War II missions. Later in the war while flying over Italy he was shot down, resulting in him joining forces with and fighting along side the Italian Partisans before escaping Italy via France to rejoin his RAF squadron once again. Still serving the RAF at the conclusion of the war, flying Spitfires in missions over Germany and North Europe.
Many have been decorated and labelled heroes for less, Mr Smith like many of those who volunteered for service against the evils of Nazism, will always be viewed as Honourable by the USA, Britain, Europe and most of the free world, that owe their freedom to those who fought for it during the 2nd World War.
